Somalia’s besieged U.N.-backed government holds only a few blocks of the Somali capital, Mogadishu, while Islamic insurgents control the rest of the city and most of the country. That turmoil – and the lawless East African nation’s proximity to Yemen, where al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula is based – has fed fears that Somalia could be used to launch attacks on the West.

The Somali soldiers joined al-Qaida and launched an assault on the few blocks of Somalia held by the U.N. government, successfully taking over. Al-Qaida militants backed out immediately after, leaving only the US trained Somali soldiers. The Somali soldiers fearing that the U.N. would come after them went out into the desert to hide and defend what is thought to be a al-Qaida terrorist training camp.
